This statement is quite deep yet majority fall prey to it. Many of us think life is automatic so we focus on living only a day at a time. We follow our daily routines without checking if we are on course with the goals we have set for ourselves. We end up allowing people to put us in their plans which we might not fit into. Regrettably we find out too late or only when we have wasted enough time trying to fit in.
Do you have a short term and long term plan? I believe the answer will be a chorus YES. It is good to know we have a plan but it doesn’t just end there. Astoundingly, most people don’t even have a plan, whether in terms of career, marriage, or education amongst others, and for those who have, I am sure majority only have it on mind.
Now let me give you a scenario. A story is told of a young man who carries a diary and sticky notes along everywhere he is going. His friends wondered what he writes on them. Some teased and called him names, others tried to find out what he’s up to. This became his practice so much so that whatever he wants to do, he had to refer to the sticky notes or his diary. He is so disciplined and brilliant in class and most of his colleagues looked up to him. He continued this lifestyle till he completed his higher education. He got a good job but in the course, unfortunately lost his memory through a fatal accident in his first year of working. He could remember some parts of his life but not all and as confused as he was he struggled daily on what to do next for two years. He felt a change in his daily routine and wondered what is missing. His parents in attempt to help him recover his memory invited some of his colleagues occasionally to the house to keep him company.
On one of these visits one of his colleagues jokingly asked if he still writes on the coloured papers. This young man replied, what papers? Kindly remind me of them? This is how life begun again for the young man. The whole family was surprised at what they found out after a search in his room for coloured papers (sticky notes). He actually has penned down his daily plan since he started school and has been checking them out line by line after execution. All these coloured papers took his memory four years back on the line and guess what, it helped him recollect if not all at least four years back on what he’s been up to and wanted to do. The diary which was found had in detail what his short term and long term plans were. He had a contingency plan, that’s what we call the PLAN-B, this comes in handy should the unexpected happens. That contingency plan really worked for him. HOW? He lost his job by reason of the accident; he stayed home for almost two years. All those years were wasted but that wasn’t the end of life for him. In fact he continued his life’s journey as if nothing had happened. What would you have done if you were in that situation? Well he discovered his plan B only because he penned down his thoughts.
What am I trying to put out here? It’s not enough to think in our minds, let’s think on paper too. The scriptures say ‘…write the Vision, make it plain…’
In our own lives, it might not be the loss of memory as was for the young man but maybe a loss of great ideas and direction, which we may have to pay for sometimes, if not now. It doesn’t cost much to put pen to paper on your plans and ideas.
Technology swarms all around us, begging our attention to the opportunities of making and taking notes on our phones, tablets or laptops. They are not made only for music, games, movies and such like. Just try it and it will be of help to you one day.
